Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
Our food safety attorneys have been retained by a number of families of premature infants who developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) after being fed milk thickened with Simply Thick. Attorneys Fred Pritzker, Eric Hageman and David Szerlag are our lead attorneys for these cases. They recently won over $20,000,000 for clients injured by another over-the-counter medical product. Contact them for a free consultation.
Fred and his team are investigating whether a Simply Thick recall is related to these cases of NEC.
What is Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)?
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the death of intestinal tissue. Severe cases of NEC cause significant intestinal necrosis, perforation of the intestine, septic shock and death. In some cases, including cases we are handling, the baby can go from having mild NEC symptoms to death within a day. If Simply Thick brand thickener is responsible for NEC in infants, Simply Thick, LLC needs to be held accountable.
NEC can be caused by bacteria, including Klebsiella, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Clostridium dificile (C. dificile), Enterobacter and Salmonella. Our attorneys are investigating whether the recalled Simply Thick products were contaminated with bacteria and if that bacterial contamination caused NEC in preterm babies. Contact our attorneys if your baby developed NEC after being fed a Simply Thick product. We will determine whether the product was part of the recall. If recalled Simply Thick manufactured by Thermo Pac, LLC is involved, Thermo Pac, LLC and Simply Thick, LLC should both be held accountable.
We are getting a number of contacts from parents whose babies had symptoms of NEC before dying but were not diagnosed with NEC. Common symptoms of NEC include any of the following:
- Abdominal distension
- Abdominal tenderness or redness
- Green vomit
- Diarrhea
- Blood in stool
- Bluish or redish discoloration of abdominal wall
- Temperature instability
- Lethargy
- Apnea (breathing difficulties).
There are other, less common symptoms of NEC. For example, kidney problems caused by a bacteria that can lead to NEC.
We found this information regarding the staging of NEC by Bell's Criteria on the University of California San Francisco website:
STAGING of NEC by Bell’s Criteria (DIAGNOSIS):
Stage 1. Suspected NEC: gastric residuals, abdominal distension, occult or gross blood in stool, x-ray normal to mild distension, temperature instability, apnea, bradycardia
Stage 2. Definite NEC: mild to moderate systemic illness, absent bowel sounds, abdominal tenderness, pneumatosis intestinalis or portal venous gas, metabolic acidosis, ↓ platelets
Stage 3. Advanced NEC: severely ill, marked distension, signs of peritonitis, hypotension, metabolic & respiratory acidosis, DIC, pneumoperitoneum if bowel perforation present
Stage 3 cases may require surgery.
NEC is sometimes referred to as necrotic bowel or necrotic colitis. We are representing families throughout the United States and anticipate filing for multistate litigation, a process like a class action but better for the families because each family's case maintains its own identity.
