Investigation of Valley Meat
E. coli Outbreak
When our E. coli lawyers are hired to represent an E. coli victim, we immediately begin an independent investigation of the outbreak and do the following:
- gather and preserve epidemiological and microbiological evidence
- hire experts in the fields of infectious disease and medicine
- determine who can be sued (e.g., slaughterhouse, meat processor, distributor, retailer, restaurant)
- Obtain corporate documents
- interview the victim and his or her family at length to determine how the E. coli infection and its complications have affected the victim's life
This Valley Meat beef E. coli outbreak began in February of 2010 when a person in California contracted an E. coli O157:H7 infection after consuming a Valley Meat ground beef product. Six other people in California became ill in April through June, all sickened by the same strain of E. coli O157:H7 as determined by PFGE genetic testing.
In response to this outbreak, Valley Meat Company, a Modesto, California firm, recalled one million pounds of ground beef products on August 4, 2010. The Valley Meat recall includes the following products:

Some of these products subject to the Valley Meat beef recall were sold to consumers. Our experience with cases involving consumer preparation of the product has been that meat processors blame consumers for the illnesses, arguing that the consumers should have cooked the meat better. The law is that the meat processors and other companies involved are to blame and not the consumer. Meat sold to consumers should never be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a dangerous foodborne pathogen that is considered an "adulterant" under federal law.
