Lincoln, Rhode Island E. coli Outbreak

Hamburger E. coliStudents and adults from Lincoln Middle School in Lincoln, Rhode Island, contracted E. coli poisoning after attending a field trip at Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, Massachusetts from October 13 through October 16.

These E. coli O157:H7 cases have been linked by genetic testing to hamburger served at the camp. The hamburger served to those sickened at Camp Bournedale had been processed by Fairbank Farms, a New York firm, and further processed by Crocetti's Oakdale Packing Co., doing business as, South Shore Meats, Inc. in Brockton, Massachusetts.

In response to this outbreak, which includes people sickened in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and possibly other states, both Fairbank Farms and South Shore Meats recalled ground beef products:

  • Fairbank Farms Beef Recall: On October 31, 2009, Fairbank Farms, an Ashville, New York firm, is recalling approximately 545,699 pounds of fresh ground beef products.
  • South Shore Meats Recall: On October 26, 2009, Crocetti's Oakdale Packing Co., doing business as, South Shore Meats, Inc. in Brockton, Massachusetts recalled about 1,039 pounds of fresh ground beef patties derived from bench trim as well as mechanically tenderized beef cuts based on confirmed laboratory evidence of the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in leftover ground beef samples obtained from Camp Bournedale

Evidence gathered by federal and state health officials may be used in an E. coli lawsuit.
