Pennsylvania E. coli Outbreak Associated with Bologna

The CDC reports 14 people have lab-confirmed cases in Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases).  These people became ill with E. coli poisoning from the bologna between Jan. 28, 2011 and Feb. 12, 2011. An epidemiologic investigation linked the Lebanon bologna products and the illnesses in these states. E. coli O157:H7 can lead to death or serious illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

In response to this E. coli bologna outbreak, Palmyra Bologna Company recalled approximately 23,000 pounds of Lebanon bologna products with the brand name "Seltzers" that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Lebanon bologna is a fermented, semi-dry sausage with an appearance similar to salami. Read more about the bologna recall.

Pennsylvania E. coli Outbreak Associated with Ground Beef

Pritzker Olsen Attorneys, a national food safety law firm is investigating a Pennsylvania E. coli outbreak associated with consumption of Valley Meats LLC ground beef products. People in Ohio and Pennsylvania have also been sickened. Children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) from the E. coli infections.

In response to this outbreak, Valley Meats LLC has recalled over 95,000 pounds of ground beef products, including frozen hamburger patties. Read more about the Valley Meats ground beef recall.

E. coli Outbreak Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The Pennsylvania Wrongful Death Act (42 Pa. Cons. Stat. Ann. § 8301) provides families recourse if a family member is killed due to negligence or intent. According to 42 Pa. Cons. Stat. Ann. § 8301, the spouse, children and parents of the deceased are "entitled to recover, in addition to other damages, damages for reasonable hospital, nursing, medical, funeral expenses and expenses of administration necessitated by reason of injuries causing death."

According to the Valley Meats ground beef recall announcement, Valley Meats distributed the recalled meat to restaurants. Every person who has been sickened at an Illinois restaurant may be able to sue Valley Meats, the restaurant and others for the injuries.
