Epidemiological Evidence That Organic Pastures Raw Milk
Gave 5 Children E. coli O157 Infections

A cluster of five children were infected, from August through October, with the same strain of E. coli O157:H7. These children are residents of Contra Costa, Kings, Sacramento, and San Diego counties. Three of the five children were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious severe complication of E. coli that may lead to kidney failure and other health problems. Epidemiologic data collected by the California Department of Public Health links the illnesses with Organic Pastures raw milk. Interviews with the families indicate that the only common reported food exposure is unpasteurized (raw) milk from Organic Pastures dairy. There have been no deaths. Surveys indicate that only about three percent of the public report drinking raw milk in any given week, so finding 100% of these children drank raw milk and the absence of other common foods or animal exposures indicates the Organic Pastures raw milk is the likely source of their infection.

E. coli-HUS Complications in Children

Possible complications of HUS include those below (not a definitive list of possible problems):

E. coli-HUS kidney failure leads to a multitude of serious health problems because the toxins that would have been eliminated from the body in urine end up in the blood. This build up of toxins is called uremia. These uremic toxins are basically poison to the body, hence the term uremic poisoning is often used to describe hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
HUS-associated hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in your brain leaks or ruptures. Hemorrhagic strokes result in tissue injury by causing compression of tissue from an expanding hematoma or hematomas.
HUS-associated seizures can be caused by kidney failure and the resulting uremia. The seizures are a sign that the body is being poisoned. HUS seizures can be caused by factors other than uremia, including by a high fever.
HUS-encephalopathy (brain disfunction or alteration) is usually related to the uremia associated with HUS kidney failure (renal failure). When uremia is the cause of the encephalopathy, it is called uremic encephalopathy, metabolic encephalopathy or toxic-metabolic encepalopathy.
HUS-pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. Normally, digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas do not become active until they reach the small intestine. But when the pancreas is inflamed, the enzymes inside it attack and damage the tissues that produce them.

HUS is sometimes accompanied by thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), which is also associated with kidney failure and central nervous system (CNS) injuries.
