Ohio E. coli Outbreak Sickens Ohio State University Students and others in Columbus, OH Area

What makes this case unusual is that the E. coli bacteria involved is not the usual E. coli O157:H7, but a non-O157 strain. According to news reports, the strain is E. coli O145, which can cause serious illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe illness that causes kidney failure, brain damage, pancreatitis and other serious health problems.

As of May 6, 2010, there are 7 confirmed and 2 probable cases of E. coli O145 in Ohio. Students at Ohio State University in Columbus were sickened in this outbreak.
