Honolulu E. coli Outbreak Associated with Peppa’s Korean BBQ
Using epidemiological evidence, the Hawaii Department of Health associated an E. coli outbreak with Peppa’s Korean BBQ in Honolulu, Hawaii. The victims of the Honolulu E. coli O157:H7 outbreak were diagnosed between March 2 and March 23, 2010. At least 7 people were sickened in the Honolulu E. coli outbreak, four of them hospitalized. One developed serious complications of E. coli O157:H7 and is still in the hospital.
E. coli infection can develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and/or thrombotic thrombocytopenic pupura (TTP). These illnesses are closely related and involve destruction of red blood cells (HUS) and platelets (TTP).
Our law firm represents E. coli victims nationwide, including victims who develop HUS and TTP. We have recovered millions from restaurants who served contaminated food.
BBQ Restaurant Lawsuit Involving E. coli, HUS and TTP
Our law firm represents E. coli and HUS victims throughout the United States. Our law firm has recently filed a lawsuit involving a The Barbecue Pit, a Georgia BBQ restaurant. In that case, we are representing a husband and wife who contracted E. coli infections after eating at the barbecue restaurant. Both microbiological and epidemiological evidence linked the illnesses with food served at the restaurant, specifically, beef.
We filed a lawsuit against The Barbecue Pit, Inc., Nebraska Beef, Ltd. and H & L Distributors seeking money damages for our clients. The husband was hospitalized with severe bloody diarrhea and cramps. The wife suffered bloody diarrhea with intense and painful stomach cramping. Shortly after she was hospitalized, she began suffering from TTP-HUS, a complication of an E. coli O157:H7 infection that causes kidney failure, and can affect other organs such as the brain and the heart.
The wife was hospitalized for two months and almost died several times. Following her hospitalization, she was transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation unit at the hospital for approximately two weeks. She required several more hospitalizations in the following months. As a result of this incident, our client sustained severe and permanent injuries involving her brain, heart, kidneys and other organs and bodily functions.
Peppa's E. coli Lawsuit: Liability and Compensation
Restaurant E. coli outbreaks can be caused by food that was contaminated before it got to the restaurant, food contaminated at the restaurant, contaminated water or a sick food handler who does not wash his or her hands adequately. In each of these cases, the restaurant can be held liable for all damages to the E. coli O157:H7 victims. Because the Hawaii Health Department is still investigating this outbreak, it is not clear who all of the defendants would be in a Peppa’s E. coli lawsuit.
Compensation generally includes amounts for the following:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Disability
- Loss of quality of life
- Other damages
