E coli PoisoningIf your child was sickened with E. coli O157:H7 at the Grand Traverse County Fair, you may be able to sue for payment of medical bills and compensation for lost income, pain and suffering and emotional distress.

According to the Grand Traverse Health Department, three children who attended the Grand Traverse County Fair have been diagnosed with E coli O157:H7. Two of the cases were reported on Friday, August 20, 2010, and one the next Monday.

The 3 young E. coli victims were not related, did not work with the same livestock or eat from the same vendors. However, manure is everywhere, and even a small amount of E. coli bacterium can cause infection and serious injury, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which can lead to kidney failure, pancreatitis, brain injury, heart problems, coma, stroke, seizures and death.

The investigation is ongoing. Genetic fingerprinting (PFGE) is being done to see if the E. coli strains are the same. Environmental samples have been collected, including water samples.
