Colorado E. coli O111 Outbreak in Four Mile Prison
Three are sick with E. coli O111 and eight more could be part of the same outbreak at Four Mile prison in Canon City, Colorado, local news sources reported Saturday, April 24. The outbreak was discovered Thursday, according to news reports. The three sick inmates were treated at the prison’s infirmary. If their illness worsens, the inmates will be transferred to the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility infirmary, also in Canon City.
The source of the illnesses is under ongoing investigation. Many outbreaks of E. coli, including E. coli O111, are often spread through food preparation and consumption. However, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti has said early inspections of the minimum-security prison’s kitchens show no unsanitary conditions.
E. coli bacteria live in the digestive systems of animals, particularly cattle, and can be present in fecal matter that can easily contaminate surrounding food and water supplies. The prison runs a dairy on site, but Sanguinetti has said none of the sick inmates worked in the dairy.
The Colorado DOC is working closely with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to investigate the source of the E. coli O111 outbreak and prevent the pathogen from spreading.
