Fralo's Art of Pizza Closed for 4 Days Due to
E coli Water Contamination

SAN ANTONIO – Fralo's Art of Pizza, located at Interstate 10 and Boerne Stage Road, was shut down by the San Antonio Metro Health Department for four days due to E. coli contaminated water supply. Metro Health tested samples of the water and reported that the tests came back positive for E coli.

Dozens of customers called in to report being sick with symptoms of nausea and diarrhea after eating at Fralo's Art of Pizza over the weekend, with what they thought was food poisoning. Some employees also called in sick with similar symptoms.

The restaurant's E coli problems started about the same time as a San Antonio Water System lift station experienced equipment failure. As much as 400,000 gallons of sewage leaked into the ground from a sewer line across the road from the restaurant. This may have been the source of the E coli water contamination of the restaurant's septic tanks. The restaurant reportedly has a shallow well. Shallow wells are more susceptible to E. coli contamination.

The owner of the restaurant, Frank Hakspiel, acting on advice from the Metro Health District, threw out all food and ice and sterilized the restaurant. Fralo's was reopened using bottled water until health inspectors found that employees had no access to hot water to wash their hands and pulled their license.

A Metropolitan Health District spokesperson said that due to the fact that the restaurant does not get water from a municipal source, they should be testing their water supply at least once a month. Hakspiel said he had been complying with that requirement until he was told he did not need to do so. He reported that the restaurant's last water test was probably in March.
