Fralo's Pizza E. coli Contamination
Investigated by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

SAN ANTONIO – Fralo's Art of Pizza, located at Interstate 10 and Boerne Stage Road, was shut down for four days after customers and employees became ill and the water suply tested positive for E. coli contamination by the San Antonio Metro Health Department. It was announced today that The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has taken over the investigation into how sewage found its way into the water well that supplies Fralo's pizza.

Reports of the numbers sickened range from 24 to 100. All those sickened report nausea and diarrhea (some bloody) after eating at Fralo's Art of Pizza recently.

The restaurant's E coli problems coincided with a San Antonio Water System (SAWS) lift station equipment failure that allowed as much as 400,000 gallons of sewage to leak into the ground near the restaurant. This may have been the source of the E coli water contamination of the restaurant's septic tanks.

Before signing-off on the case, SAWS ran current water samples and they came back clean. Water samples of nearby wells have also come back clean.

There are many key questions to be asked to get to the bottom of this E coli outbreak:

  • What caused the contamination of water at a Fralo's Art of Pizza restaurant?
  • Why did it take the reported "several days" to find the leak?
  • Isn't there an alarm system in place to report leaks?
  • How long does it take for 400,000 gallons of water to leak from a "faulty" lift station?
  • Why hasn't that lift station been maintained better since there have been many complaints and reports of a stench in that area for a long time?
  • Did someone really tell the restaurant owner he did not have to keep doing water quality tests? If so, who?
  • Who is the restaurant water quality watchdog?
  • Once SAWS realized they had a leak, why didn't they notify surrounding businesses and residents of the problem and instruct them to use an alternate water source?
  • Why did SAWS initially report that no one was affected by the August 19th overflow without even checking with local businesses?

E coli Outbreak Attorney

E. coli attorneys and food safety lawyers at PritzkerOlsen law firm want these questions answered. PritzkerOlsen attorneys are investigating this situation and the illnesses potentially related to this outbreak. “By serving food to the public, a restaurant is essentially guaranteeing that the food product is safe,” said food safety attorney Elliot Olsen. “If it turns out that any portion of that food is not safe, and people become sick as a result, the restaurant can be held responsible.”
