Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

E. coli O103

E. coli Answer BookE. coli O103 is similar to the more prevalent E. coli O157:H7 in that it is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).  It is the Shiga toxins that can cause serious injury or death.  E coli 0103 is part of a group of E. coli serotypes called non-O157 STEC or non-O157 E. coli.

It is harder to identify E. coli O103 than E. coli O157, and most health departments have to send samples to the CDC for a confirming O103 test. Because identification is difficult, E. coli O103 infections are most likely underreported.

E. coli O103 has been a cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in Europe and the United States.

HUS can cause any of the following:

E. coli O103 Outbreaks

  • E. coli O103 Outbreak in a Nursery School - An E. coli O103 outbreak in a nursery school sickened at least 3 children. The source of the outbreak was not determined.1
  • E coli 0103 Outbreak Linked to Sausage - During the spring of 2006, a national disease outbreak caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O103:H25 was investigated in Norway. By PFGE it was shown that isolates from one particular type of fermented sausage “morr sausage 1” were identical to the isolates from the outbreak victims. Samples of sheep meat that were linked epidemiologically to meat used for sausage production also contained isolates identical or closely related to patient strains.2

The amount of compensation for an E. coli 0103 victim is dependent on a number of factors, including the length of the hospital stay, the estimated time for recovery, complications related to the E. coli poisoning, estimated medical expenses into the future, and other factors.
