Recent Outbreak Involving E. coli from Steak
Our E. coli lawyers are investigating cases of E. coli O157 that may be associated with steak served at restaurants in California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. At least 21 people may have contracted E. coli O157 infections. These illnesses prompted National Steak and Poultry to recall 248,000 pounds of blade-tenderized, non-intact steaks. Read about the steak recall.
According to National Steak and Poultry and news reports, potentially-contaminated steak was sold to Applebee's, Olive Garden, Moe's, Carino's Italian Grill and KRM. Other restaurants may also be involved in this steak E. coli outbreak.
E. coli poisoning from steak can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and/or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), life-threatening illnesses that can cause kideny failure (renal failure), brain damage, heart problems, coma, stroke, seizures and multiple organ failure.
Our law firm is aware of at least one person who has been diagnosed with E. coli HUS that may be part of this outbreak. Please contact our law firm if you have any information regarding this outbreak that may be helpful.
Liability for E. coli in Steak
Blade tenderized, non-intact steak can be contaminated with E. coli in the brine that is injected into the steak during processing. Research has shown that this type of steak must be cooked extremely well to kill the E. coli bacteria that may be present in the center of the meat product.
The restaurants involved in the steak E. coli outbreak failed to cook the steak well enough to kill the E. coli, even though they used a product that is known to have a history of E. coli contamination. They and the processor, National Steak and Poultry, an Owasso, Oklahoma, establishment, should be held accountable.
When an outbreak is caused by E. coli in steak, the processor of the steak product and restaurants that served the steak are liable to the E. coli victims and their families for damages, meaning they can be sued by the victims and their families to recover money to compensate for past and future:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Disability
- Loss of quality of life
- Other damages
