E. coli O157:NM, TTP and HUS
Our lawyers win money for E. coli victims who
develop TTP and HUS.
We hold companies accountable.
E. Coli O157: NM is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure due to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and/or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli food poisoning. E.coli O157: NM differs from E. Coli O157:H7 in that it lacks the flagellar H antigen, making it non-motile (NM).
An E. coli O157:NM outbreak in Michigan has been linked to ground beef processed by McNees Meats and Wholesale LLC., a North Branch, Mich., establishment. There are 5 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:NM and 4 probably cases. Six of outbreak victims have been hospitalized. Contact our attorneys for a free consultation.
E. coli O157 and TTP
We just settled a case for an E. coli-TTP victim sickened in another outbreak. She was hospitalized for months and never fully recovered. We are currently representing a woman who is still struggling for her life after eating food contaminated with E. coli O157 by another food processor. Another E. coli-TTP client had so much damage to her colon (colitis) that she needed a colectomy. She is a wonderful woman who makes the best of having a colostomy bag.
With E. coli-TTP, A toxin produced by E. coli (shiga toxin) damages blood vessles, causing the formation of tiny thrombi (blood clots) in blood vessels throughout the body, but particularly in the central nervous system (CNS) and kidneys. Because the formation of the thrombi (blood clots) uses an abnormally high number of platelets, the number of platelets in the bloodstream decreases to dangerously low levels.
Complications of E. coli-TTP include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Hypertension
- Stroke
- Seizure
- Coma
- Hemolytic anemia
- Heart failure and other heart damage
- Renal failure (kidney failure)
- Pancreatitis
- Enlarged liver
- Colon damage (colitis that in some cases requires a colectomy)
- Death (wrongful death because E. coli contamination is preventable)
E. coli O157 and HUS
HUS and TTP are related and cause similar complications. TTP is sometimes referred to as adult HUS, but TTP is harder on the central nervous system.
We are also representing several people with E. coli-HUS. Although children are more at risk for HUS, some of our clients have been teenagers and adults. In every case, our clients suffered kidney failure and needed dialysis.
HUS develops when E. coli lodged in the digestive tract make toxins that enter the bloodstream and start to destroy red blood cells. In most cases, HUS causes kidney failure. With kidney failure, the urine output decreases. The urine may also appear red. Urine formation slows because the damaged red blood cells clog the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, making them work harder to remove wastes and extra fluid from the blood. The body’s inability to rid itself of excess fluid and wastes may in turn cause high blood pressure or swelling of the face, hands, feet, or entire body.
Complications of HUS are severe and can include the following:
- Hemolytic anemia and associated blood complications
- Abnormal kidney function
- HUS Kidney failure (renal failure) that may require a kidney transplant (renal transplant) - illness accompanying kidney failure is called uremia (develops when urea and other waste products are retained in the blood)
- Gall stones - probably caused by rapid hemolysis, breaking open of red blood cells and the release of hemoglobin
- Elevated pancreatic enzyme levels that could lead to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and or HUS pancreatitis
- Central Nervous System (CNS) disturbances such as irritablilty, behavior changes, disorientation, delerium, hallucinations, dizziness and tremors
- HUS Seizures
- HUS Coma
- HUS Stroke
- HUS Encephalopathy
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome (HUS-ARDS)
- Convulsions
- Heart problems, including heart attack (myocardial infarction), cardio myopathy, cardiogenic shock, congestive heart failure (HUS heart attack and heart failure)
- Cortical blindness, caused by damage to the visual area in the brain's occipital cortex
- HUS Thrombocytopenia (platelet deficiency in the blood)
- Death
We believe the best way to deter companies from selling food contaminated with E. coli is to make them pay when they do. We also believe that E. coli-HUS and E. coli-TTP victims should be compensated for all medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages to them and their families. This should always include amounts for future expenses, losses and pain.
