The CDC reports 14 people have lab-confirmed cases in Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases).  These people became ill with E. coli poisoning from the bologna between Jan. 28, 2011 and Feb. 12, 2011. An epidemiologic investigation linked the Lebanon bologna products and the illnesses in these states. E. coli O157:H7 can lead to death or serious illness, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

In response to this E. coli bologna outbreak, Palmyra Bologna Company recalled approximately 23,000 pounds of Lebanon bologna products with the brand name "Seltzers" that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Lebanon bologna is a fermented, semi-dry sausage with an appearance similar to salami. Read more about the bologna recall.
