E. coli Kidney Failure
E. COLI KIDNEY FAILURE (RENAL FAILURE) ALERT: The CDC has notified health professionals that patients given antibiotics for an E. coli infection (E. coli food poisoning) may have a greater risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the cause of E. coli kidney failure (renal failure from E. coli food poisoning).
The following information on E. coli kidney failure is provided by Pritzker | Ruhonen, a leading E. coli litigation law firm. The firm is currently representing the families of two women who died from E. coli infections that developed into HUS. (See information on CBS affiliate interview of Fred Pritzker on E. coli and the wrongful death of a victim of the E. coli outbreak linked to spinach.) The Progression of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) Leading to E. coli Kidney Failure (Renal Failure)
Most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) occur after an infection of the digestive system by Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) bacterium, which is found in foods like undercooked meats and non-pasteurized dairy products and juices.
- The Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) bacterium lodges in the digestive system and forms toxins that enter the bloodstream and start to destroy red blood cells.
- The damaged red blood cells clog the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, making it harder to remove wastes and extra fluid from the blood.
- The excess fluid and wastes may in turn cause high blood pressure or swelling of the face, hands, feet, or entire body.
Antibiotics given for an E. coli infection put patients at higher risk of developing HUS. Your medical professional should be aware of this.
Early Symptoms of E. coli Kidney Failure (Renal Failure)
- Fever
- Vomiting and Diarrhea
- Blood in the stools
- Irritability
- Weakness
- Lethargy
Advanced Symptoms of E. coli Kidney Failure (Renal Failure)
- Paleness
- Unexplained bruises
- Unusual bleeding
- Swollen limbs or generalized swelling
- Yellowish skin (jaundice)
- Extreme fatigue
- Decreased urine output
- Decreased consciousness
Treatment and Long-Term Consequences of Eschericia coli Kidney Failure (Renal Failure)
The most effective treatment consists of maintaining normal salt and water levels in the body. That approach eases the immediate symptoms and prevents further problems. Avoid antibiotics because they increase the risk of HUS and avoid antidiarrheal agents as they prevent the body from eliminating the toxins.
Only the most severe cases of HUS require dialysis. Some children may have significant kidney damage that slowly develops into permanent kidney failure that would require long-term dialysis or a kidney transplant. The overall mortality rate from HUS is 5-15%. Most children recover completely with no long-term complications.
