Blood ClotOur client suffered bloody diarrhea with intense and painful stomach cramping. Shortly after she was hospitalized, she began suffering from TTP-HUS, a complication of an E. coli infection that causes kidney failure and can affect other organs such as the brain and the heart.  Our client was hospitalized for two months and almost died several times.

Following her hospitalization, she was transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation unit at the hospital for approximately two weeks.  She required several more hospitalizations in the following months.  As a result of this incident, our client sustained severe and permanent injuries involving her brain, heart, kidneys and other organs and bodily functions.

What is HUS-TTP?

Although thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) are separate conditions, they can develop simultaneously in a patient with an E. coli infection involving the following strains of E. coli:

With HUS-TTP, fibrin-coated platelets create blood clots (thombi) in the microvascular system. Red blood cells are shredded by the fibrin. The result is a severe reduction of red blood cells and platelets.

TTP-HUS Complications

Complications of TTP-HUS include the following:

  • Stroke
  • Blindness
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Hypertension
  • Neurological deficits (can be permanent)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Death
