HUS InformationHUS encephalopathy is usually related to the uremia associated with HUS kidney failure (renal failure). When the kidneys fail, toxins the body should have excreted in urine get into the blood and circulate throughout the body. One of the areas most often damaged is the central nervous system (CNS). When uremia is the cause of the encephalopathy, it is called uremic encephalopathy, metabolic encephalopathy or toxic-metabolic encepalopathy.1

Because HUS causes so many problems throughout the body, other causes of encephalopathy are possible. Also, in rare cases, dialysis can cause encephalopathy. This is called dialysis encephalopathy or dialysis dementia and is usually associated with aluminum used in dialysis.1

Research suggests that most HUS victims suffer some encephalopathy.2 This is important legally because victim compensation should reflect this and any expected long-term neurological problems. Some of our HUS clients have suffered severe, brain damage. In these cases, it is vitally important to recover as much money as possible for the HUS victim and his or her family.

Most cases of HUS are caused by E. coli O157:H7. If your loved one has E. coli HUS, he or she has legal rights, including the right to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of quality of life. Compensation can be sought from all parties responsible for the E. coli O157:H7 infection that caused the HUS.
