HUS E. coli O157 Information for You and Your Family

E. coli O157:H7 (Escherichia coli O157:H7) infection is the most common cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), although other strains of E. coli and Shigella can also cause HUS.

HUS develops from a poisoning in E. coli called Shiga toxin that causes red blood cells to be misshapen. When that happens, those misshapen red blood cells can get clogged in tiny vessels in the kidneys called glomeruli. This can block the filtration system in the kidneys that allows waste products to be removed from the body.

If enough of those glomeruli become clogged, the E. coli victim suffers kidney failure and needs dialysis. HUS can lead to other serious complications and death.
