HUS E. coli O157 Information for You and Your Family
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a severe condition marked by the following:
- Acute renal failure ( E. coli HUS kidney failure)
- Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
- Hemolytic anemia
- Central nervous system manifestations (HUS E. coli CNS)
E. coli O157:H7 (Escherichia coli O157:H7) infection is the most common cause of HUS, and generally manifests with the most serious symptoms in children, especially those under 5, the elderly and people with compromised immune symptoms. This said, our law firm has represented adults who suffered severe complications of HUS E. coli O157 who were not in one of these high-risk groups.
Because of the close association of HUS with E. coli O157, the CDC urges health professionals to get a culture for E. coli O157 from all HUS patients.
If E. coli O157 is found in the culture, the CDC recommends avoiding treatment with antibiotics. In several E. coli outbreaks, people who received antibiotics had a higher risk of kidney failure or death.
In some cases, by the time a patient seeks medical attention for the HUS, the E. coli culture will be negative because the E. coli has passed through the patient’s system. The CDC recommends doing a rectal swab on admission for any patient suspected of having HUS in addition to getting stool samples.
HUS E. coli O157 Complications
Our lawyers have represented HUS E. coli O157:H7 clients who spent weeks in the hospital fighting for their lives. They have also represented families of HUS E. coli victims who did not survive.
Complications of HUS E. coli O157:H7 include the following:
- Stroke
