Hemolytic Anemia Information for You and Your Family

TTP and HUS-associated microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) occurs when there are not enough red blood cells in the blood because:

  1. They have been prematurely destroyed by TTP or HUS-caused fibrin-coated platelet clumping in blood vessels.
  2. The bone marrow is unable to increase production to make up for the premature destruction of red blood cells.

Anemia can lead to secondary organ damage, including heart arrhythmia and heart failure.
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic pupura (TTP) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) are two possible causes of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia:

  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) – Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) occurs when too many platelets are destroyed. With TTP, tiny thrombi (blood clots) form in blood vessels throughout the body, but particularly in the central nervous system (CNS) and kidneys. Because the formation of the thrombi (blood clots) uses an abnormally high number of platelets, the number of platelets in the bloodstream decreases to dangerously low levels.
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) – Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a disorder often related to the consumption of food, usually hamburger, contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. It involves the damage and destruction of red blood cells and is one of the leading causes of kidney failure.
