E. coli Recall: Ground Beef

On July 17, 2006, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced the recall of  ground beef processed and sold in Maryland. George G. Ruppersberger & Sons, Inc., a Baltimore, Maryland., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 315 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The ground beef products subject to recall are:

10- pound packages of "GROUND BEEF, NET WEIGHT 10 LBS., KEEP REFRIGERATED." Each package bears the establishment number "Est. 5931" inside the USDA mark of inspection and the package code, "627963."

The ground beef was produced on July 13 and was distributed to restaurants and institutions in Baltimore, Maryland.

If you suspect you have E. coli food poisoning, you need to see a doctor immediately. The doctor should get a stool sample. Ask that the stool sample be tested on sorbitol-MacConkey (SMAC) agar, which is the agar that the sample must be tested on to confirm a diagnosis of E. coli 0157:H7. Most laboratories that culture stool do not test for E. coli O157:H7, so it is important to request that the stool specimen be tested on sorbitol-MacConkey (SMAC) agar for this organism.

E. coli 0157:H7 may lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). About 2%-7% of infections lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome. In the United States, hemolytic uremic syndrome is the principal cause of acute kidney failure in children, and most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome are caused by E. coli O157:H7.

About one-third of persons with hemolytic uremic syndrome have abnormal kidney function many years later, and a few require long-term dialysis. Another 8% of persons with hemolytic uremic syndrome have other lifelong complications, such as high blood pressure, seizures, blindness, paralysis, and the effects of having part of their bowel removed.

Pritzker | Ruohonen has recovered millions of dollars for victims of E. coli 0157:H7 poisoning and other foodborne illnesses. Pritzker | Ruohonen has offices in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
