Hospital-Treated Dog Bites on the Rise in Minnesota
According to a recent report by the Minnesota Department of Health, there has been a 40% increase in hospital-treated dog bites in Minnesota in the last few years. The largest growth was in the number of dog bites treated in emergency rooms. Most of the hospital-treated dog bites in Minnesota involved young children.
In 75% of the cases, the person bitten was familiar with the dog or dogs involved. Because the behavior of both young children and dogs can be unpredictable, a young child should never be left alone with a dog, and parents should teach children about dog bite prevention at an early age.
Dog Bite Victim Compensation: Hospital Bills and Other Medical Expenses, Lost Income, Pain and Suffering
When someone is bitten by a dog, the dog’s owner (or person boarding the dog) is liable under Minnesota law. This means that the owner must compensate the person bitten for any of the following:
- Hospital bills and other medical expenses
- Lost income--money you lost because you were bitten by a dog
- Pain and suffering, which includes physical pain, emotional distress, disfigurement, disability, loss of quality of life and embarrassment
Every dog bite case involves some disfigurement.
A dog’s tendency to bite is based on factors such as its early experiences, socialization, and the victim’s behavior, as well as the dog’s heredity. There are situations where the owner of the keeper of the dog has trained the dog in such a way as to make the dog particularly dangerous. If such a dog bites someone, the victim may make a claim for punitive damages, an amount meant to punish and/or deter behavior.
If someone dies as a result of a Minnesota dog bite / attack, the next of kin have a claim against the owner under Minnesota wrongful death law.
Minnesota dog bites are usually covered under the homeowner’s insurance policies. Our Minnesota dog bite lawyers have obtained significant amounts for our dog bite and dog attack clients. Contact our law firm for information about our dog bite settlements and verdicts.

Minnesota Dog Bite Law: Punitive Damages
Our law firm has obtained punitive damages in a Minnesota dog bite case. Punitive damages are meant to punish behavior as a deterrent to future, similar behavior.
Pit Bull Bite and Pit Bull Attack
Pit bull bites and pit bull attacks can cause serious injury or death. There is usually a claim for disfigurement due to a face bite, arm bite, leg bite, etc. Pit bulls can also bite the head or neck and cause death. There have also been cases of amputation.
Rottweiler Attack and Killed by Rottweiler
Rottweilers are ranked second behind Pit Bulls for number of fatal human attacks. With a Rottweiler dog bite injury, there is almost always a claim for disfigurement because a dog bite makes jagged tears in the skin and very frequently there is loss of soft tissue. If the victim survives a bite to the face, neck, arms or legs, they are scarred physically and emotionally for life.
