DePuy Hip Lawsuit

Our product liability attorneys are representing many people who have suffered harm as a result of the DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip implant. Below is information regarding a DePuy hip lawsuit against DePuy Orthopaedics and Johnson & Johnson (J & J).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published concerns about metal-on-metal hip implant systems, of which the DePuy ASR hip implant is a prime example. A DePuy hip replacement recall was issued in August of 2010.

The concern with the metal-on-metal hip implant systems has to do with rotation of the metal against the metal causing microscopic metal fragments. In some people, the tiny metal fragments cause an inflamatory response. This may cause destruction of tissue and bone surrounding the implant. This may cause loosening of the hip implant. When this happens, hip revision surgery is needed. With hip revision surgery, the surgeons explant the hardware that has been put in and then have to cut more bone out and refashion the bone that is there in some cases. Then a new hip replacement system has to be implanted. This involves a long healing period and may result in less function.

The other problem with these metal fragments is that sometimes they get into the blood stream. This can cause an increase in metal ions in the blood and can affect the nervous system, the heart and the thyroid gland.
