Crib Suffocation Lawsuit
Crib recalls have grown to about 5 million since 2007, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Crib suffocation is one of the biggest hazards prompting these recalls.
Crib suffocation happens most often under circumstances where babies become trapped in a space between the mattress and side rail of the crib, often because hardware fails and the side rail becomes detached.
Many of these recalled cribs were drop-side cribs, which have three fixed sides and the fourth can be raised and lowered to more easily pick up a child from inside the crib. The sides of drop-side cribs have also been known to come loose in a manner that allows an infant’s head or neck to become entrapped between the side rail and headboard, posing a crib strangulation hazard.
Drop side cribs have been so heavily recalled that media reports suggest the CPSC has considered banning them completely.
Some retailers no longer carry dropside cribs and ASTM International, which regulates voluntary industry standards, has voted to no longer certify drop side cribs for sale in the United States.
A November 2009 Stork Craft crib recall, which involved 2.1 million cribs and was the largest crib recall in U.S. history, shone a new spotlight on the potential dangers of dropsides.
“I do not think dropside cribs, if it’s not going to be certified by the industry, will be a part of cribs in the future,” CPSC Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum told MSNBC. She recommended that parents who have drop-side cribs replace them if possible.
Recent drop-side crib recalls include:
- Nov. 23, 2009 StorkCraft and Fisher Price recall
- Jul. 2, 2009 Simplicity dropside crib recall
- June 9, 2009 LaJobi drop-side crib recall
- October 21, 2008 Delta drop side crib recall
Crib brands that have been recalled in recent years include: Simplicity, Delta, LaJobi, Jardine, SunKids by SunTech, Stork Craft and Fisher Price, Munire, Playkids USA, and others.
