Crib Strangulation Lawsuit
Safety officials cite 48 deaths and two cases of brain damage reported due to strangulation related to knobs and posts on crib corners.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises particularly against cribs with decorative corner posts that protrude above the crib edge, which can snag clothing and pacifier cords while infants climb up the corner areas of the crib to stand. (The CPSC recommends NEVER tying a pacifier around a child’s neck for these reasons.)
A recent example of headboard cutouts prompting strangulation recalls include a Nov. 2009 LaJobi recall, which involved decorative corner posts that, in at least one case, proved fatal.
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) has adopted voluntary standards restricting crib cornerpost extensions to 1/16 inch unless the posts are high enough out of a child’s reach. When shopping for a crib, parents should also keep these dimensions in mind. While most manufacturers have already stopped making these types of cribs, many still present a danger in parents’ homes, in second-hand furniture stores or garage sales.
The CPSC recommends removing dangerous corner posts from cribs by unscrewing them or sawing them off and sanding the surface smooth.
What to look for in a safe crib
- No corner posts over 1/16th inch high so a baby's clothing cannot catch.
- No cutouts in the headboard or foot board so a baby's head cannot get trapped.
- A firm, tight-fitting mattress so a baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the crib.
- No more than 2 3/8 inches (about the width of a soda can) between crib slats so a baby's body cannot fit through the slats; no missing or cracked slats.
