What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. Concussion is the most common type of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
A concussion is a short loss of awareness or consciousness in response to a head injury. The injured person may not black out but may merely feel dazed. Most concussions are mild, but some can have serious, lasting side effects.
Concussion Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include any of the following:
- Confusion
- Amnesia
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Slurred speech
- Fatigue
- Ringing in the ears (may lead to chronic tinnitus)
- Memory problems
- Concentration problems
- Light sensitivity
- Noise sensitivity
- Sleep problems
- Behavioral issues, such as irritability and depression
Some of the symptoms of concussion may not manifest for days after the accident.
A concussion can result in postconcussion syndrome, a condition where the symptoms of concussion last for weeks or months. Because concussion symptoms can be long-lasting and severe, a concussion victim should not settle with an insurance company immediately after an accident. Concussion Causes
Traffic Accident Concussion
Most concussions happen during traffic accidents. You may have suffered a concussion while driving a car, motorcycle or bike. You may also have been run into while walking in a pedestrian crossing or on the side of the road.
Slip and Fall Concussion
For people over 75 and very young children, falls are the most common cause of concussion. Some falls are due to the negligence of another, for example, a fall on a store’s slippery floor or icy sidewalk. If you have fallen and hit your head, you may have suffered a concussion or more serious head injury.

Brain Injuries and Motor Vehicle Accidents
One of the major causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is motor vehicle accidents. Even a "minor" accident may result in brain injuries. We guide our clients through the process of determining the extent of the brain injuries, and we work to obtain just compensation for those injuries and the related pain and suffering.
Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries Related to Electrical Accidents
Another major cause of brain injuries is electrical accidents. Brain injuries from electrical accidents can occur as a direct result of an electric shock, from a fall after an electric shock, or from cerebral anoxia due to related respiratory problems.
