LaJobi Crib Recalls

“Molly” and “Betsy” Cribs Due to Strangulation Risk

LaJobi Betsy Crib Recall Lawsuit In December of 2001 and again in December of 2009, LaJobi recalled about 400 "Molly" and "Betsy" cribs due to a strangulation risk. The reason the recall was reannounced in December 2009 is because a one-year old girl died when her head and neck became entrapped in the headboard cut-out of the “Betsy” style crib in 2003 in Mississippi, following the 2001 recall. According to the 2009 announcement, there were no other incidents, but it still took the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) 6 years to address the potential problem and work with LaJobi to reannounce the recall.

The problem with these cribs is that they have cut-outs in the end panels that can allow young children to get their heads entrapped, which can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers.

This LaJobi crib recall involves both “Molly” and “Betsy” style wooden cribs. The end panels on the "Molly" style cribs are made of solid wood with openings on both sides. The end panels on the "Betsy" style cribs are constructed with wood slats. The model numbers are printed inside the headboard at the bottom.

Bonavita "Cabana" Drop Side Cribs

LaJobi Bonavita Cabana Drop-Side Crib In August of 2009, LaJobi recalled about 2,000 Bonavita “Cabana” Drop Side Cribs because the wooden crib slats can detach or break creating a gap, which can pose an entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers.

LaJobi had received 16 incident reports of crib slat failures, including 10 reports of slats falling out of rails and 6 reports of slats breaking.

This LaJobi crib recall involves Bonavita “Cabana” wooden drop side cribs with metal mattress supports. The cribs were manufactured from January 2006 through October 2008 and have production dates between 01 JAN 2006 and 31 OCT 2008. The model name, color, product order (PO) number, production date and other crib identifiers are printed on a label located on the inside bottom rail of the headboard or footboard. The cribs were sold in three finishes, antique white, classic cherry and montego brown. Cribs with other production dates are not affected by this recall.

Bonavita "Hudson" and Babi Italia "Pinehurst" Drop-Side Cribs

LaJobi Pinehurst and Hudson Cribs Recall

In August of 2009, LaJobi recalled about 2,900 Bonavita “Hudson” and Babi Italia “Pinehurst” Drop Side Cribs because the lower spring pins on the footboard and headboard can pop out of the tracks located on the drop side causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, it creates a hazardous gap between the drop side and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become entrapped and suffocate or fall from cribs.

CPSC and LaJobi had received a total of 33 reports of drop side detachment due to spring pin failure. In these reports, two children became entrapped and one child fell from cribs. Both entrapped children were freed by caregivers, one child was bruised.

The recalled cribs are wood with a metal mattress support and have drop sides and were sold in a variety of finishes including cherry, espresso, natural, and white. Hudson and Pinehurst drop side cribs with production dates from December 2006 through August 2007 are included in the recall. The recalled cribs have the production date, product order (PO) number, item number, and color printed on a label attached to the footboard or headboard.

Babi Italia "Tiffany" and "Josephine" Cribs

LaJobi Tiffany Crib Recall In August of 2003, Babi Italia, a division of LaJobi Industries Inc., recalled about 2,000 "Tiffany" and "Josephine" model cribs to replace crib drop-side rails. The slats on the drop-side rails can come loose or detach. A child's head can get caught in the space left by loose or missing slats, presenting an entrapment hazard. In addition, children can fall through the slat opening.

Prior to the recall, CPSC and LaJobi received 41 reports of slats separating from rails of the crib. One child became entrapped between slats that came loose. Ten children fell out of the crib when the slats came out of the drop-side rail. No serious injuries have been reported.

The "Tiffany" and "Josephine" model cribs are made of solid natural wood with a chest of drawers attached to the footboard. The cribs can be converted into a toddler bed and an adult bed. The Tiffany cribs were manufactured from June through October 2001 and the Josephine cribs were manufactured from January through October 2001. The crib manufacture date code is located on the inside bottom of the headboard. The four middle numbers inside the eight-digit production number indicate the month and year of manufacture. Tiffany cribs with production date codes (four middle numbers) 0601, 0701, 0801, 0901 and 1001 and Josephine cribs with production date codes (four middle numbers) 0101, 0201, 0301, 0401, 0501, 0601, 0701, 0801, 0901, and 1001 are included in the recall.
