Dorel Juvenile Group child safety seatOn February 15, 2011, Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) recalled nearly 800,000 child safety seats due to "sticky" harness locking and release button that does not always return to its locked position. If the button is not in the locked position, the harness could loosen during use. A loose harness could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

DJG said the problem involves certain restraint systems manufactured from May 1, 2008, through April 30, 2009, and sold under the Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st brands, which have a center front adjuster for the harness. Included in this recall are infant, convertible and booster child restraint systems which were sold both as stand-alone seats or part of a travel system (car and stroller purchased together).

Anytime a child is put in the child safety seat, the parent or caregiver should make sure the harness is properly adjusted and the lock/release button is in the locked position. After making any needed adjustments, pull on the shoulder part of the harness to make sure it is secure and does not loosen.

We want to stress the urgency of this recall. If your child is strapped into one of these child seats, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash and even in a crash avoidance maneuver where you have to slam on the brakes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a formal investigation into the "sticky" harness button on March 5, 2010. The NHTSA will continue the investigation to further evaluate the adequacy of the recall scope.

Why did it take so long to issue a recall? How many children suffered injury? Have any deaths been linked to this product?
