What is Belladonna Toxicity?

Belladonna Toxicity Belladonna is a perennial herb that contains alkaloid atropine, a narcotic. All parts of the plant contain alkaloid atropine and are therefore toxic, but the berries are so deadly, that 2-5 of them can kill a child.

Belladonna is used for medicinal purposes, but manufacturers must be careful to consistently only use amounts that will not cause belladonna toxicity, which can cause serious illness and death. Symptoms of belladonna toxicity include the following:

Blindness
Visual illusions
Disturbance of hearing (ringing in the ears, for example)
Numbness of the face
Swelling and redness of the face
Loss of memory
Confusion
Delirium
Seizures
Nausea
Vomiting
Swelling and redness of the face
Coma
