Colorado Dept. of Health Advisory Regarding
Kinikin Corner Dairy Raw Milk
According to a Colorado Department of Health press release dated April 7, 2009, the state health department is contacting approximately 200 people who are participants in the Kinikin cow share operation, whereby individuals buy a share of a cow and in return receive raw, unpasteurized milk. People are advised not to consume raw milk and raw milk products from this dairy and to discard any such products in their homes.
The public health order states Kinikin Corner Dairy shall immediately cease distributing or making available for distribution raw milk and raw milk products produced at Kinikin until further notice by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The department is working with Montrose Health and Human Services officials on the investigation of the outbreak.
Risk of Contracting Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Symptoms of Campylobacter include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. People experiencing these symptoms should consult with their health care provider.
In rare cases, Campylobacter can cause Guillain-Barré (pronounced ghee-YAN bah-RAY) syndrome, a condition in which the body damages its own nerve cells (outside of the brain and spinal cord), resulting in muscle weakness and, in some cases, paralysis.
According to the CDC:
GBS can last for weeks to months. Most people eventually recover completely or nearly completely, but some people have permanent nerve damage and between 5% and 6% of people who develop GBS die.
The most severe cases of Guillain-Barré involve paralysis of the muscles that control breathing. When this happens, the patient will require help from a machine to breathe. In most cases, this is a temporary condition. But some people never fully recover and about 5% of the people who develop Guillain-Barré die.
The long-term consequences of developing Guillain-Barré from a Campylobacter infection should be discussed with one of our attorneys. Any recovery (settlement or jury award) you receive from liable parties should include compensation for future medical expenses and future pain and suffering.
