Hendricks Farm Raw Milk and Campylobacter

Since September 1, 2008 at least seven confirmed cases of Campylobacter have been associated with drinking raw milk from Hendricks Farm & Dairy in Franconia, PA, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The people sickened live in unrelated households in Pennsylvania and in a neighboring state. Other individuals in these households have also experienced similar gastrointestinal illness, but they have not tested positive for Campylobacter.

On September 17, a spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture said at least one sample of the raw milk from Hendricks Farms & Dairy that was submitted by a consumer who got sick, has tested positive for campylobacter bacteria. This is the smoking gun that links the illnesses to Hendricks Farm raw milk. Contact our law firm about a Hendricks Farm lawsuit.

What is Campylobacter?

CampylobacterCampylobacter is the name of a genus of a spiral-shaped bacteria found primarily in the intestines of animals. One type of Campylobacter bacteria, Campylobacter jejuni, causes an illness in humans called campylocateriosis. Humans contract campylocateriosis when they ingest contaminated animal feces. In recent years, raw milk has emerged as one of the foods that poses a risk for Campylobacter.

Campylobacteriosis (also called Campylobacter enteritis or gastroenteritis) is characterized by diarrheal illness, usually accompanied by fever, and abdominal cramps. Almost 99 percent of Campylobacteriosis is caused by Campylobacter jejuni. In rare cases, Campylobacter can cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, a servere illness that can lead to paralysis and death.
