Campylobacter BacteriaCampylobacter is a bacteria that people get from food. It is generally associated with raw or undercooked poultry products or raw milk. The best way to understand what Campylobacter is and how it affects people is to tell you about two cases we recently handled.

Campylobacter Case Study One

The first case was caused by undercooked chicken served at Chipotle, which are typically pretty clean restaurants and very well managed restaurants. But the one involved in this outbreak of Campylobacter had a cross contamination issue where raw products touched ready-to-eat products.

Our client was a woman who contracted Campylobacter with the typical first symptoms:

  • extreme stomach cramping
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

Unfortunately for her, she developed a nervous system disorder called Guillain-Barre syndrome. She was hospitalized for over a month.

Campylobacter Case Study Two

The other case we are handling involves raw milk contaminated with Campylobacter. Again, our client suffered the normal symptoms and then developed Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), an autoimmune system disorder which has a very wide range of symptoms but its worst manifestation is complete paralysis. Our client became paralyzed and remains so today, unable even to breathe on his own.
