Campfire Lodge Resort Campylobacteriosis: Investigation and Evidence Implicating Contaminated Well Water

Campylobacter and campylobacteriosisWell water from the Campfire Lodge Resort has been linked to an outbreak of campylobacteriosis, the illness caused by Campylobacter bacteria, according to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.  As of July 30, 2010, there are 14 laboratory-confirmed cases of campylobacteriosis and at least 70 probable cases.

Campfire Lodge Resort is located outside West Yellowstone. Health officials were alerted to the problem late last week, when a higher-than-average number of cases of campylobacteriosis were reported around the Hebgen Lake, Montana, area.  According to Montana health officials, many of those sickened were treated for dehydration at Madison Valley Medical Center.

Health officials determined that the source of the campylobacteriosis was well water from a private well that services Campfire Lodge Resort based on both epidemiological and microbiological evidence, including the following:

  • Information from patients indicated that a statistically significant number of them had consumed water at the Campfire Lodge Resort restaurant, West Yellowstone Riverside Cafe.
  • The well water tested positive for Campylobacter.

According to health officials, the Campylobacter contamination was probably caused by a leak in the resort's well.
The resort’s West Yellowstone Riverside Cafe will remain closed until the source of the contamination is identified and completely eliminated.

Campylobacteriosis (also called Campylobacter enteritis or gastroenteritis) is characterized by diarrheal illness, usually accompanied by fever, and abdominal cramps. Almost 99 percent of Campylobacteriosis is caused by Campylobacter jejuni. In rare cases, Campylobacter can cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, a servere illness that can lead to paralysis and death.
