The Risks of Campylobacter Bacteria Infection
Most cases of Campylobacter run their course and end in complete recovery. Some people who are infected never have any symptoms at all. People who have weak immune systems are more susceptible to severe cases of the illness that can lead to serious health complications and even death. Campylobacter bacteria risks include:
- Arthritis
- Blood Poisoning
- Meningitis
- Heart Attack
- Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
- Guillain-Barrè Syndrome
- Severe Dehydration
The most common risk of infection from Campylobacter bacteria is severe dehydration. If you or someone in your family has a Campylobacter infection, make sure the infected individual drinks plenty of fluids. If it is not possible to remain properly hydrated, hospitalization may be necessary.
Other risks of Campylobacter, all very rare, may include meningitis, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, urinary tract infections, short-term reactive arthritis, or inflammation of the gall bladder.
Studies have shown that in some rare cases, a Campylobacter infection may lead to Guillain-Barrè Syndrome. In this illness, the infection attacks the body's nerves, causing paralysis and sometimes death.
Campylobacter Risks Increased for Young Children, Pregnant Women, Elderly and Others with Weakened Immune Systems
In people who have weak immune systems--cancer patients, people with AIDS, very young children and the elderly, for example--the infection can spread to the blood and become life-threatening. These cases often require hospitalization.
Risk of Death from Campylobacter Bacteria Infection
Although Campylobacter infections can result in death, this result is extremely rare. According to the USDA, only 20 deaths have been recorded as a result of Campylobacter infection, but because many cases are undiagnosed, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) estimate that as many as 100 people die each year in the U.S. as a result of gastroenteritis.
Campylobacter Bacteria Prevalent in Food Supply
It is fairly likely that you or someone in your family has been, or will be, infected with Campylobacter at some point. Campylobacter is one of the most common bacterial causes of diarrheal illness in the United States. Campylobacteriosis is estimated to affect over 1 million persons every year, or 0.5% of the general population. Although Campylobacter doesn't commonly cause death, it has been estimated that approximately 100 persons with Campylobacter infections may die each year.
