Deadly Bus Crash In Missouri: On Interstate 44 in Missouri, driver inattention and short following distances may have contributed to the crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers. The chain reaction started when the driver of a truck tractor cab had to stop in a construction zone. The three vehicles directly behind the semi cab crashed into the semi cab, with one of the vehicles being crushed killing the 19 year-old driver. Two of the vehicles involved in the crash were St. James School District school buses, operated by Copeland Bus Service LLC. The buses were transporting students to Six Flags St. Louis.

School Bus Accident: Minnesota Law

School Bus Accident Under Minnesota law, school bus drivers must obey all traffic laws. Because school buses are "common carriers," the owner of a bus and the driver are held to a higher degree of care than other drivers. The driver must use utmost caution when driving in order to ensure the safety of the passengers. The owner of the school bus (a bus company or a school district), must keep the bus in exceptionally good working condition, hire qualified drivers, train drivers, fire drivers who may pose a danger to the passengers, make sure the bus is a secure and safe vehicle in every way.

Minnesota is one of the states that has put some restrictions on cell phone use while driving.  Minnesota Statutes, Section 169.443, subdivision 9, was amended to read that a school bus driver may not operate a school bus while communicating over, or otherwise operating a cellular phone for personal reasons when the vehicle is in motion. This restriction applies whether the style of the cell phone is hand held or hands free. This also includes texting.

If a school bus involved in an accident was defective, the manufacturer of the bus and others may be liable for any injuries and deaths. We have a national reputation in the area of product liability. Read about bus recalls
