The following information on the Clif Bar & Company peanut butter items recall is provided by PritzkerLaw. Our law firm is representing the family of one of the people who died in the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has sickened over 470 people and has been associated with 6 deaths. This case does not involve a the products below, which have been recalled but have not been implicated in this outbreak.

Below is the FDA Clif Bar recall announcement:

BERKELEY, Calif., Jan 19, 2009 -- Clif Bar & Company today announced a voluntary recall of CLIF(R) and LUNA(R) branded bars that contain peanut butter because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recalled products contain peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of an investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter.

The following Clif Bar & Company products with "Best By/Sell By" dates ranging as shown below, in all sizes and packages, are included in the recall:

  • Clif Builders Peanut ButterBEST BY/SELL BY: 19JUL09 to 30SEP09, and 05NOV09 to 18NOV09

These products were sold in grocery, warehouse and other retail stores throughout the United States. No other CLIF or LUNA products or flavors are included in this recall.

Salmonella Typhimirium: Alfalfa Sprouts Recall

Sprouters Northwest, Inc. of Kent, Washington has recalled its alfalfa sprout products (alfalfa sprouts, onion sprouts, and salad sprouts) because they may be linked to a recent outbreak of Salmonellosis in Oregon and Washington State. To date, 13 cases of Salmonella Typhimirium infection have been associated with the consumption of raw alfalfa sprouts.

The recalled alfalfa sprout products are Sprouters Northwest brand and include all lot numbers with a best by date of 9/17/08 or earlier of: 5oz alfalfa sprout cups UPC - 033383701417, 4oz alfalfa clamshells UPC-815098001088, 1lb bags of alfalfa sprouts UPC - 079566123508, 2lb trays of alfalfa sprouts UPC – 079566123492, 5oz salad cups UPC - 033383702674, 4oz salad clamshells UPC - 815098002061, 5oz alfalfa onion sprout cups UPC - 033383701905, and 4oz onion sprout clamshells UPC – 815098002054.

The recalled sprouts were distributed in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alasks in retail stores and through wholesale produce suppliers.

Salmonella Typhimirium can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which maybe bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis (swelling of the lining of the heart) and Reiter's syndrome.

Health officials are urging people to get medical attention if they experience any of the above Salmonella symptoms after eating any of the recalled products.
