Plum Organics Baby Food Recall Due to Botulism Risk

Plum Organics has recalled one batch of its 4.22 oz. Apple & Carrot Portable Pouch baby food with the best by date May 21, 2010 and marked with the following universal product code (UPC) #890180001221 located on the bottom of the package.

Plum Organics recalled the baby food due to the risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that produces a toxin that can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. Consumers should not use these products, even if they appear to be normal, because of the possible health risk. Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

The recalled Plum Organics baby food pouches are sold individually at Toys-R-Us and Babies-R-Us locations nationally.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product and no other
Plum Organics products are affected.

"The product did not meet the FDA guidelines for proper acidity level," said Dr. Paul Gerhardt, a Food Science Ph.D. and member of the Plum Organics action team. "Though the risk of illness from this one batch is minimal, Plum Organics is taking the extraordinary step of recalling all Apple & Carrot Baby Food Pouches with best by date May 21, 2010."

"As a mother, the safety and satisfaction of our customers and their children is my highest concern," said Plum Organics Founder Gigi Lee Chang. Due to a mixing error during production, one batch of this product was improperly blended. As a result, it did not meet our company`s standard for quality. We are taking the extra step of recalling all Apple & Carrot Portable Pouches with this date to eliminate any question in the minds of consumers about the safety of our products. Plum Organics was founded on the vision of superior quality and nutritious baby food; we are committed to these values and our consumers."

Listeria Found in Soft Mexican-style Cheese

Listeria monocytogenes was discovered by inspection in soft Mexican-style cheese, prompting a recall by the Michigan-based maker of the product.

Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese of Reading, Michigan, announced the recall Tuesday. The company said it is recalling Asadero and Oaxaca cheese products distributed to retail stores and delis in 10-pound balls, six-pound blocks and smaller plastic packages of 12 and 16 ounces. States on the distribution list include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The food safety experts at PrtizkerOlsen Attorneys remind consumers that soft cheeses are a common source of Listeria outbreaks. Recognizing Listeria symptoms may be difficult because a wide range of symptoms can be associated with the illness. The most common symptoms of Listeria poisoning include flu-like fever and muscle aches, upset stomach or diarrhea and stiff neck, headache, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions.
PritzkerOlsen, one of the few law firms in the country practicing extensively in the area of foodborne illness, offers a special reminder that pregnant women are more at risk to contract listeriosis than other healthy adults. The illness can cause miscarriage, stillbirth and life-threatening disease in infants.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) helped publicize Tuesday's recall announcement, which pertains to all production dates between Aug. 1, 2008 (expiration date 10/29/2008) and Feb. 27, 2009 (expiration date 5/10/2009). The packages are sold under the name "Aguas Calientes." The blocks were sold under the name "El Jaliciense'' and may also include a label with the name Torress Hillsdale Country Cheese LLC.
No illnesses have been reported in association with the recalled products. The discovery of Listeria in a sample of Asadero cheese was from a routine sample taken by an inspector from the Michigan Department of Agriculture's Food and Dairy Division on Feb. 23.

Listeria Recall: J and B Meats Bratwurst

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is warning consumers not to eat smoked pork and beef bratwurst make by J&B Meats of Barnesville, Minnesota, with the lot number PBB30306, and Minnesota State Establishment Number 1198. The recalled J&B Meats bratwurst may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially-fatal foodborne pathogen. The contamination was found through routine testing.

J&B Meats sold the bratwurst at its retail store in Barnesville, about 20 miles southeast of Moorhead. J&B Meats is asking consumers to return any recalled bratwurst to the store. However, if someone has eaten any of the bratwurst, it should be kept in the freezer and labeled “Do not eat” for at least 70 days (Listeria incubation period) after the date it was consumed. If the person(s) who ate the recalled bratwurst are diagnosed with a Listeria infection (listeriosis), the recalled bratwurst may be evidence.

According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, there are no reports of illnesses from the product. The sausages are often sold frozen, meaning people who do not hear of this recall could eat the bratwurst months from now.
