Caramia Crib Recall

About 1000 Caramia "Diane" cribs have been recalled because the slats on the cribs drop-side can detach from the top and bottom rails, posing fall and entrapment hazards to an infant or young child. The recalled cribs were manufactured in Slovenia and distributed by Caramia Furniture and Mother Hubbard Cupboard's of Ontario, Canada.

The recalled Caramia "Diana" cribs were manufactured between September 2002 and June 2004. A label affixed to the inside of the headboard or footboard lists the manufacturing dates. The recalled cribs were sold at Buy Buy Baby and juvenile product and mass merchandise stores nationwide from September 2002 through December 2005 for between $240 and $370.

Caramia has received 18 reports of slats detaching from the rails of the crib. No injuries have been reported.

Crib recalls have grown to about 5 million since 2007, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Crib suffocation is one of the biggest hazards prompting these recalls.

Crib suffocation happens most often under circumstances where babies become trapped in a space between the mattress and side rail of the crib, often because hardware fails and the side rail becomes detached.

Many of these recalled cribs were drop-side cribs, which have three fixed sides and the fourth can be raised and lowered to more easily pick up a child from inside the crib. The sides of drop-side cribs have also been known to come loose in a manner that allows an infant’s head or neck to become entrapped between the side rail and headboard, posing a crib strangulation hazard.

Drop side cribs have been so heavily recalled that media reports suggest the CPSC has considered banning them completely.
Some retailers no longer carry dropside cribs and ASTM International, which regulates voluntary industry standards, has voted to no longer certify drop side cribs for sale in the United States.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises particularly against cribs with decorative corner posts that protrude above the crib edge, which can snag clothing and pacifier cords while infants climb up the corner areas of the crib to stand. (The CPSC recommends NEVER tying a pacifier around a child’s neck for these reasons.)

A recent example of headboard cutouts prompting strangulation recalls include a Nov. 2009 LaJobi recall, which involved decorative corner posts that, in at least one case, proved fatal.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) has adopted voluntary standards restricting crib cornerpost extensions  to 1/16 inch unless the posts are high enough out of a child’s reach. When shopping for a crib, parents should also keep these dimensions in mind. While most manufacturers have already stopped making these types of cribs, many still present a danger in parents’ homes, in second-hand furniture stores or garage sales.

The CPSC recommends removing dangerous corner posts from cribs by unscrewing them or sawing them off and sanding the surface smooth.
