Bicycle Recall: Defective Face Plate
On June 22, 2006, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of about 2,700 bicycles, including the following:
- S-Works Tarmac
- Tarmac Pro
- S-Works Roubaix
- Roubaix Pro
- Allez Pro
- S-Works Transition
The bicycles were recalled because the faceplates holding the handlebars on the bicycle can crack and cause the handlebar to break off, posing a serious fall hazard. The manufacturer of the faceplates, Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, California, has received 5 reports of the magnesium faceplate exhibiting cracks.
The recalled bicycles were sold by Specialized retailers from June 2005 through April 2006 as original equipment of the recalled bicycle models, S-Works Tarmac, Tarmac Pro, S-Works Roubaix, Roubaix Pro, Allez Pro and S-Works Transition. The defective magnesium faceplates were also sold as replacement parts.
