Colchicine Recall

According to a recall letter issued by ApotheCure, the company has acknowledged that recent deaths have been reported in connection with ApotheCure-compounded injectable Colchicine (specifically, .5mg/ml, 4ml vials, lot number 20070122@26). At the request of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, ApotheCure issued a recall for all strengths, sizes and lots of compounded Injectable Colchicine that the company has sold in the last year.

ApotheCure is a Texas pharmacy that compounds drugs for distribution nationwide.  In this case, the company took Colchicine, a drug commonly given orally, and made it injectionable.  In the cases of the 3 people who died, the ApotheCure-compounded injectionable Colchicine was administered to the patients intravenously to treat back pain.

According to a story in the Salem News:

An investigation by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office revealed that a drug lot preparation error led to two, and possibly three, deaths due to colchicine toxicity in Oregon and Washington. Two of the deaths occurred in Portland and the other death occurred in Yakima County, Washington.

According to Dr. Christopher Young, Deputy State Medical Examiner, the investigation revealed that the toxicity was the result of an error by ApotheCure Inc. where an intravenous preparation of colchicine was prepared at nearly 10 times the desired concentration.
