National Amputation Foundation: The National Amputation Foundation was founded in 1919 by a group of amputee veterans who suffered the loss of limb or limbs in the service of our country in World War I. From its inception, the Foundation was aware of the needs unique to amputees and therefore, dedicated all its efforts to helping all veteran amputees. Since then, the Foundation has expanded its facilities to include civilian amputees as well.

A Manual for Below-the-Knee (Trans-Tibial) Amputees: The objective of this manual is to make readily accessible to "below-knee" amputees, including persons who have had Syme's amputation, the information generally provided to them orally by members of the treatment team - the medical doctor, the physical therapist, the prosthetist, and others. Included, also is additional information for persons who have had an amputation through the ankle, or Syme's amputation.

Amputee Coalition of America: The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA), the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) and Hanger Orthopedic recently partnered to bring together amputees and advocates from across the country. The purpose was to ensure that congressional efforts to reform our healthcare system will meet the needs of people with limb loss by including prosthetic and orthotic devices in the minimum coverage standards.

Amputation Prevention

Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention: Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) is a comprehensive program that can dramatically reduce lower extremity amputations in individuals with diabetes mellitus, Hansen's disease, or any condition that results in loss of protective sensation in the feet. The LEAP Program consists of five relatively simple activities:

Annual foot screening
Patient education
Daily self inspection of the foot
Appropriate footwear selection
Management of simple foot problems
