Personal Injury and Wrongful Death
Semi Truck Hit Bicycle:
Attorney for Investigation and Lawsuit
Our law firm recently represented a family whose loved one was killed by semi truck as she was riding her bicycle in a bike lane, similar to the accident below.
A semi truck hit two female bicyclists participating in a community bicycle ride. The women were hit while riding in the bike lane.
The tractor-trailer truck approached in the outside lane. The rear right section of the trailer struck one of the cyclists, causing her to veer right and crash into the other cyclist. Both women were knocked off their bicycles and hit the road and metal guardrail. One woman broke her left leg. The other woman broke her right hand and wrist and sustained a head injury.
What we hear over and over is semi drivers saying they didn't see the bicycle. Legally, additional caution must be used near a bike lane.
One of our clients has designed a bumper sticker in memory of his wife, who was killed by a semi-trailer-truck. According to the driver, he didn't see her. Read our tribute to Julie Casey. For information on obtaining a LOOK bumper sticker, please email Jon Jon Sandberg at jon@outdoordesignllc.com.
Steps to Take after a Bicycle Accident
There are a number of steps that need to be taken following a bicycle accident to ensure everything with your claim goes as smoothly as possible:
- See a doctor as soon as possible for your medical injuries. Frequently, an injury from a bike accident can be underestimated. You may feel fine immediately following the accident, but some injuries, particularly neck, back and head injuries, can become quite painful and debilitating over time.
- Gather as much information as you can about your accident, including the names, numbers and addresses of all the people involved. Don't forget the eye witnesses.
- Get copies and keep track of insurance information and the reporting process. This evidence will be helpful to your bicycle accident attorney.
- Do not talk to anyone about your bicycle accident, other than law enforcement personnel. Anything you say to insurance company representatives or investigators could make it more difficult for you to settle your claim. It is also a good idea not to sign anything, particularly some kind of release form, without talking to an experienced bicycle accident attorney first. This is just a smart way for you to protect yourself.
- Contact a bicycle accident lawyer with enough experience and resources to launch an investigation into your accident. An independent investigation can be critical to your case and the amount of compensation received.
