Gastric Bypass Surgery at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California
Nearly 300 patient who had gastric bypass surgery at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California, have been notified that they are at risk for HIV, Hepatitis B, and/or Hepatitis C. A nurse at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla was not properly sterilizing the surgical instrument used for gastric bypass surgery, a gastroscope. According to Scripps Hospital, the nurse was disinfecting the gastroscope but not sterilizing it according to hospital procedures.
Although Scripps Hospital is claiming the risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis B, and/or Hepatitis A is minimal, the situation is serious and deadly viruses could have been transmitted to unsuspecting patients due to the negligence of a Scripps Hospital nurse.
