B-K Medical Prostate Biopsy Device (Transrectal Ultrasound Transducer)

16 Veterans' Medical Centers have notified about 27,000 veterans who received a prostate biopsy that they may be at risk.  Prostate biopsies involve removing small samples of prostate tissue that are examined under a microscope for cancer.  The VA medical centers were using a device manufactured by B-K Medical called a transrectal ultrasound transducer, which was inserted in the rectum and guided to the prostate to allow a hollow needle to take tissue samples.  At the VA medical centers this device was sterilized but not cleaned between uses.  The problem was discovered when feces were found in a prostate biopsy device after sterilization.

According to the Veterans' Administration, the VA medical centers followed manufacturer's instructions.  The instructions, according to the VA, did not state clearly that the device needed to be cleaned with a brush between uses and before sterilization, so the device was not cleaned with a brush between uses, leaving blood and feces from one patient in the device before inserting it in another patient.

Although the Veterans' Administration is claiming the risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis B, and/or Hepatitis A is "almost nothing," the situation is serious and deadly viruses could have been inserted into unsuspecting patients.
