Fleet Phospho-Soda Kidney Failure and
Acute Phosphate Nephropathy
Bowel cleansing products are used to cleanse the stool out of your bowel before certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy. In most of our Fleet kidney failure cases, our client consumed the Fleet phospho-soda product before a colonoscopy, but the Fleet phospho-soda bowel cleansing products were also used to clean the bowels for other medical procedures.
The Fleet phospho-soda products work by causing you to lose fluid through your bowel movements. This flushes out the bowel. Fleet phospho-soda products in lower dosages have also been used as laxatives.
When the higher dosages of Fleet phospho-soda products are used to cleanse the bowels, FDA has determined that there is a high risk of developing acute phosphate nephropathy, kidney injury (often kidney failure) caused by diffuse tubular damage as a result of deposition of calcium phosphate in the distal tubules and collecting ducts. Acute phosphate nephropathy may lead to permanent renal impairment (kidney failure) and the need for dialysis.
