Visicol and OsmoPrep (Oral Sodium Phosphate Products) and Acute Phosphate Nephropathy

Our attorneys have found evidence that Visicol and OsmoPrep, oral sodium phosphate products (OSP) for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy or other procedures, can cause acute phosphate nephropathy. Acute phosphate nephropathy is a form of acute kidney injury that is associated with deposits of calcium-phosphate crystals in the renal tubules that may result in permanent kidney failure (renal failure) and other kidney damage.

"Our clients have suffered kidney failure, and we are also represesnting the families of people who died," said Attorney David Szerlag. "In every one of our cases, the acute phosphate nephropathy occured after using an OSP in patients with no pre-existing health factors that would have put them at risk for developing kidney injury."

The following is a summary from the FDA:

  • Acute phosphate nephropathy, a type of acute renal failure, is a rare, but serious adverse event associated with oral sodium phosphate bowel cleansing.
  • When acute phosphate nephropathy occurs, renal impairment is often permanent and may require chronic dialysis.
  • Individuals at increased risk include:  those of advanced age, those with decreased intravascular volume or kidney disease, and those using medicines that affect renal perfusion or function [diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and possibly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)].
