Fresh Express Veggie Lover's Salad Recall
Due to Risk of Listeria Contamination

A potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination has resulted in a Veggie Lovers Salad recall by Fresh Express, the Food and Drug Administration announced. The recall of nearly 3,000 cases of Veggie Lovers Salad is being issued after tests done by the Ohio Department of Agriculture found that one unit contained the harmful Listeria bacteria, which can cause listeriosis. No illnesses were reported in connection with this recall.

The recall is directed at both consumers and retailers. The FDA is urging consumers to check their refrigerators to see if they have the recalled Fresh Express Veggie Lovers Salad, and if so, they should throw it away immediately. Retailers are advised to check store shelves and remove the product so it cannot be purchased. Fresh Express is already notifying retailers Units involved in this recall include those with the following product codes and "use-by" dates:

  • Product Code I208
  • Use-by Date of August 10, 2010

The recalled products were distributed in 13 states including: MO, MI, OH, IL, WI, IN, MD, MA, NY, KS, KY, PA, NJ. The products could potentially have been redistributed to 14 more states, including: AR, TN, WV, IA, MN, DC, VA, VT, NH, NE, RI, PA, CT, MS.

Listeriosis is especially dangerous in pregnant women. It can cause flu-like symptoms in the mother but result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or bacteremia and meningitis in newborns. Listeriosis symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. If you suspect you've contracted a listeriosis infection from Fresh Express salad, keep the salad and contact a doctor to get tested for the pathogen. If your case is confirmed, the original bag of salad will be useful evidence in a listeriosis lawsuit.
