Lead Poisoning: Recall Information
Manufacturers, distributors and sellers of children’s products—including jewelry, toys and candy—are making, distributing and selling products with lead. They are putting our children at risk for lead poisoning. The devastating effects of lead poisoning to children are well documented:
- Young children under the age of six are especially vulnerable to lead's harmful health effects, because their brains and central nervous system are still being formed. For them, even very low levels of exposure can result in reduced IQ, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, behavioral problems, stunted growth, impaired hearing and kidney damage. (National Safety Council)
- At high levels of exposure, a child may become mentally retarded, fall into a coma and even die from lead poisoning. (National Safety Council)
- Lead exposure has been tied to ADHD, a neurological condition that affects a child’s ability to focus on tasks and complete them. (MedlinePlus)
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Lead is toxic to humans, and people should avoid all exposures to it.”
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Recalls Due to Lead Poisoning Risk
Every year the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalls products that pose a risk of lead poisoning. Products recalled in 2006 due to lead content and risk of lead poisoning include the following:
- Baby Bracelet Lead Poisoning
Allerds Design (doing business as Hidden Hollow Beads) recalled about 900 Allreds Design Baby Bracelets and Pacifier Clips on February 17, 2010, because the recalled Allerds Design bracelets and pacifier clip clasps contain high levels of lead. - Wal-Mart Charm Key Chain Recall: Wal-Mart has recalled certain key chains because the charms contain an excessive amount of lead. The Illinois Attorney General informed Wal-Mart and CPSC on April 16, 2008, that the key chain was found in the home of a 9-month-old child who was discovered to have high blood-levels of lead. The child was observed mouthing this key chain.
- Children's Butterfly Necklaces: 113,800 necklaces with lead-laden butterfly pendants were recalled.
- Liz Claiborne - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of Juicy Couture Children’s Jewelry manufactured by Liz Claiborne Inc., of North Bergen, New Jersey.
- 70%-lead Makoti Ingots distributed in North Dadota: Lead ingots distributed at the Makoti Threshing Show have been recalled. The ingots are 70% lead, which is enough lead to kill a young child should he or she swallow it.
- Shirley Temple DVD metal charm: About 730,000 metal charms found in Shirley Temple DVDs were recalled.
- Children’s necklaces sold at Dollar General Stores: About 55,000 children’s necklaces imported by Selected Trading Corp. and sold at Dollar General Stores for $1 were recalled.
- American Girl jewelry: About 180,000 pieces of jewelry sold by American Girl were recalled.
- Reebok charm bracelet: About 300,000 charm bracelets sold with Reebok shoes were recalled after a 4-year-old boy died from lead poisoning.
- Dollar Tree Store jewelry: About 580,000 pieces of jewelry sold at Dollar Tree Stores were recalled.
- Beaded Photo Charm Bracelet: About 25,000 beaded photo charm bracelets imported and sold by Oriental Trading Company were recalled.
