What are Implanted Neurostimulators?

Neurological implants are used in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, in cases of intractable chronic pain and for other chronic neurological disorders. The implanted electrodes of these devices electrically stimulate the nervous system and provide relief for the symptoms of a particular condition. For example, the chronic tremors of Parkinson’s Disease can sometimes be controlled effectively through deep brain stimulation. In the case of Parkinson’s, the implanted electrodes run quite deep into the central areas of the brain. Patients with chronic pain have also found relief through the use of implanted neurological stimulators.

Implanted Neurostimulators and MRI

Patients with implanted stimulators must be treated with particular care when undergoing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Recently, the FDA received several reports of serious injuries caused by the improper use of MRIs on patients with implanted neurological stimulators. Although these reports involved deep brain stimulators, similar injuries can be caused by any type of implanted neurological stimulator. PritzkerOlsen, P.A.defends the rights of patients who have been injured through the implantation of deep brain stimulators.

An MRI allows physicians to visually examine brain function by following the flow of blood. Through quick bursts of magnetic energy, the oxygen in the brain’s blood is temporarily polarized and can be monitored visually. In the cases reported to the FDA, these magnetic bursts heated the metal leads of the implanted electrodes. This effect of an MRIs can harm patients with any type of metal in their brain or skull, including the metal leads of neurological stimulators (as well as any residual shrapnel or metal plates).

PritzkerOlsen, P.A.represents victims of medical malpractice. If you or someone you know has been injured through the improper implantation of neurological stimulators or through the improper administering of an MRI, please call PritzkerOlsen, P.A.
