Cryptosporidiosis

Cryptosporidiosis Outbreak:
A Minnesota cryptosporidiosis outbreak has been linked to the waterpark at the Edgewater Resort in Duluth, MN. To date, there are 22 confirmed cases and 75 additional reports of illness. Cryptosporidiosis, also known as crypto, is caused by a parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum.

What is Cryptosporidiosis?

Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease caused by microscopic parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium. Both the disease and the parasite are commonly known as "Crypto."

Many species of Cryptosporidium exist that infect humans and a wide range of animals. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it very resistant to chlorine disinfection.

Intestinal cryptosporidiosis is characterized by severe watery diarrhea but may, alternatively, be asymptomatic. Pulmonary and tracheal cryptosporidiosis in humans is associated with coughing and frequently a low-grade fever; these symptoms are often accompanied by severe intestinal distress.
